By BBN Staff: Yesterday, the Belize Police Department held its first ever graduation of the Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) program at the Belize Central Prison.

The GREAT Program is a violence prevention program

Twenty-six inmates from the prison’s Wagner’s youth facility received training from the Belize Police Department’s Eastern Division Region One.

These at-risk youths participated in 12 weeks of classes conducted by certified trainer P.C 1414 Alexander Shal.

The program is used to fight delinquency, youth violence, and gang involvement through school-based, law enforcement officer-instructed classroom courses.

The participants should now be able to better manage conflicts, make better decisions, manage anger and identify and keep away from gangs.

The Belize Police Department expressed gratitude to KOLBE Foundation’s CEO, Virgilio Murillo and staff for allowing the program to be taught there.

The department also thanked the United States Embassy in Belize for their continued support to the program.

Commander of Eastern Division region one, Sr. Supt. Howell Gillett stated, “We have now pledged to offer the program to the wider prison population almost immediately.”
