DFC and Ministry of Tourism sign MOU to promote renewable energy in the tourism sector

BBN Staff:  A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which aims in promoting the uptake of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RE/EE) technologies in the Tourism Sector was signed last week on the 20th of June 2018, between The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation (MTCA) and the Development of Finance Corporation (DFC).

According to the release, the Belizean government considers Renewable Energy/ Energy Efficiency (RE/EE) an important factor in reducing the country’s energy intensity levels and for alleviating the adverse impacts of climate change which is in accordance with Belize’s Strategic Development Goals, The National Sustainable Tourism Master Plan (NSTMP) 2012-2030 as well as the National Tourism Policy 2017-2027. Also MTCA, under its Responsible Tourism Implementation Plan 2018-2022, is pushing for the approval of the RE/EE technology in the Tourism Sector.

Using the MOU, the MTCA and DFC will be pushing for a National Campaign promoting Renewable Energy in the Tourism Sector and MTCA recommending DFC’s RE/EE lending product in their future plans, product development, promotional programs, and events.

The release further reiterates that both the MTCA and DFC will be sharing tourism related data and other information relevant to facilitating target marketing when promoting DFC’s Renewable Energy Pilot Financing Facility.

General Manager of DFC, Mrs. Natalie Ewing-Goff stated, ‘What we would like to see is impact. We would like in two years to say that so many hotels have adopted the new technology and have seen the reduction in their utility bills and those monies can be used for some other facet of development  within the hotel industry and that it can be replicated in other sectors of the economy.’

The Chief Executive Officer for the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Yashin Dujon, also commented saying, ‘We’re very excited and adamant about hitting the ground running and our strategic program aligns with this very well. We’re focused on promoting responsible Tourism throughout the country in all facets; Renewable Energy, Renewable Resources, and Human Development are all huge components of what we are geared towards.’
