By BBN Staff: It has been twelve days since San Narciso businessman, Omero Campos, has been reported kidnapped.
Today Assistant Superintendent of Police, Alejandro Cowo, provided an update to the press.
He explained that officers of the Belize Police Department, Coast Guard and Belize Defence Force have collaborated on search efforts to locate Campos.
According to Cowo, the search teams have since combed from Douglas village to the northern border with Mexico but there have been no clues recovered.
On Monday our media house received an email from purported kidnappers who indicated that they were, “Tired of keeping and feeding him.”
Those kidnappers had asked that 20 bitcoins be sent within 48 hours or Campos’ life would be at stake.
A bitcoin, is a virtual currency which converts to about six thousand US dollars. Twenty bitcoins would convert to almost a quarter of a million Belizean dollars.
When asked about this email, Cowo told the press that he learned of it yesterday. He conceded that the email was traced to a company in Switzerland.
According to him, the email address could not be cracked as it is one of the most secure emails in existence.
He explained that since then, they are unable to confirm if Campos is still alive.
