The PUC announced the approved increase this morning. Belize Electricity Ltd. had initially requested a 7.7% increase in the cost of electricity, however, after review, the PUC had decided on a 4.4% increase in May, when BBN had first reported electricity rates would increase. Since then, after review, PUC made its final decision approving the 6.24% increase.

The PUC conceded that the company does have to grapple with increasing energy costs, for which the PUC saw the need to ensure that the rates do go up to help the company adjust to that cost.
