By BBN Staff: On June 26, 2018, the Embassy of Israel in Belize and Deputy Chief of Staff, Alon Lavi, officially opened a ceremony for a course entitled, “Police and Community”  at the Police Training Academy in Belmopan.

The course is being offered to members of the Belize Police Department, nongovernmental organizations, and community-based organizations by Israeli authorities.

Among the participants are two Special Constable (SC) Officers from the Cayo Special Constables Committee.

SC Wilword Jones and SC Donovan Flores are taking the course which began on June 26, 2018, and will end on Wednesday, July 4, 2018.

Jones told BBN that the training has been very informational and beneficial to him as a SC since it focuses on how to better engage with partners in the community.

The participants are being trained on the community policing model that Belize has been working with.

Community Policing includes several aspects of traditional law enforcement as well as prevention, problem-solving, community engagements and partnerships and provides the opportunity for a balance of reactive responses to calls for service with proactive problem solving that is focused on the cause of crime.

In an interview with the media last week, Minister of State responsible for Police, Elodio Aragon explained that the Community Policing model provides a forum for the police and the community to work together to enhance the safety and quality of life in our communities.
