By BBN Staff: On Monday, July 2, 2018, shortly after 5 p.m., both police and fire personnel responded to #32 T Street, Belize City, where they observed the wooden house of Gilda Jones, 59, engulfed in flames.
Jones reported to police that she was at home just minutes before the fire started, and had just left to go visit her in-laws, who live three houses away from her own.
While there, she was told that her house was on fire and when she went to check, she saw her house practically destroyed.
The fire department revealed that there are some indications that the fire may be a cause of arson, however, unconfirmed reports suggest that Jones may have been targeted since she had previously received several threats from members within the community.
According to the unconfirmed reports, Jones most recent threat was – ‘all informers need to die’ and it came from a few young men living in the area. She was apparently being considered an informant because of a recent burglary of a house occurring within the neighborhood. The culprits had apparently wanted to hide the stolen items in her yard and Jones did not agree with it.
Police investigations are ongoing.
