By BBN Staff: Today, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) upgraded the tropical depression in the Atlantic to Tropical Storm Beryl.
Beryl is the second name storm of the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
At this time, Beryl is located near latitude 10.3 North and longitude 42.8 West.
Beryl is moving toward the west near 16 mph (26 km/h). A fast westward to west-northwestward motion is expected through the weekend.
On the forecast track, the center of Beryl will remain east of the Lesser Antilles through Sunday.
Beryl’s maximum sustained wind speeds strengthened from 40 miles per hour to 50 miles per hour this afternoon.
According to the NHC, additional strengthening is forecasted, and Beryl could become a hurricane by Friday or Saturday of next week.
Beryl is forecast to degenerate into an open trough just east of the Lesser Antilles over the weekend.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the center.
Beryl is a tiny tropical storm and currently poses no threat to Belize.
