By BBN Staff: Every month, the United States Embassy in Belize honors a Belizean woman for her arduous work in Belize.
Michele Irving is the Embassy’s Woman of the Month for July 2018.
Irving is an activist from the Stann Creek district. She has been involved in community development work for the past 25 years. Her passion is working in the area of gender and development for women and girls.
Irving is currently the Women’s Department officer for the Stann Creek district. Her work focuses on the prevention and intervention of domestic violence cases and empowerment of women and youth in both urban and rural communities.
Irving goes into many communities and addresses with women the changes they want to see in their communities and in their own lives.
Irving is also the Coordinator of the Productive Organization for Women in Action (POWA), a community-based organization in Dangriga, which provides advice and support for victims of gender based violence and HIV/AIDS. One of the objectives of POWA is to eliminate violence against women and girls.
Irving also created a girl’s group. The group teaches leadership skills to girls and is a support group for victims of sexual violence, providing counseling and directing them to organizations that can further assist them.
“Gender Based Violence has been a scourge in our lives. I work to create a new Belize, where violence has no place.” – Michele Irving.
