International day of Co-operatives being celebrated on Saturday in Belize city

Posted: Friday, July 6, 2018. 3:02 pm CST.

By BBN Staff:  The Department of Co-operatives with the sponsorship of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment, and Sustainable Development, will be hosting a ceremony to honor this year’s International Day of Co-operatives on Saturday, July 7.

The ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m., at the Battlefield park in Belize city. Thereafter a small expo will be held where the co-operatives will be given the opportunity to promote their services while selling their goods and produce including fruits, vegetables, honey, seafood products, and processed and fresh foods.

Every year on the first Saturday in July, the International Day of Co-operatives is celebrated. It was first celebrated in 2005 when the United Nations sponsored the event, however, its history dates back to 1923 when it was celebrated as the international co-operative movement and the International Co-operative Alliance.

The event focuses on bringing awareness on co-operatives while also showing the successes of the movement as well as its ideals of international solidarity, economic efficiency, equality and world peace. They are also striving to not only strengthen, but to extend a relationship between the co-operative movement and other factors such as local, national and international governments.
