Tropical Storm Beryl strengthens into 1st Hurricane of the 2018 Hurricane season

Posted: Friday, July 6, 2018. 7:21 am CST.

BBN Staff: Tropical storm Beryl strengthened over-night into Hurricane Beryl in the Atlantic Ocean.

Beryl is the first Hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

As of 5 am today, the center of Hurricane Beryl was located near latitude 10.6 North and longitude 45.1 West.

Beryl is moving toward the west near 14 miles per hour (22 km/h). A faster west-northwestward motion is expected through the weekend.

On the forecast track, the center of Beryl will remain east of the Lesser Antilles through early Sunday.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 miles per hour with higher gusts.

According to the National Hurricane Center, some additional strengthening is forecasted today.

It is expected that late Sunday, however, Beryl degenerates into a strong open through as it approaches the Lesser Antilles.

Beryl is a very compact hurricane with hurricane-force winds that extend outward up to 10 miles (20 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km).

There are currently no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

Interests in the Lesser Antilles should monitor the progress of Beryl.

Hurricane Beryl currently poses no threat to Belize.
