By BBN Staff: The Hopkins Belize Humane Society, in collaboration with the Belize Zoo, facilitated a training initiative along with staff from the Belize Zoo.

Dr. Alexis Moreno, the head vet at the Reid Park Zoo in Arizona, United States of America and primary vet at the Austin Zoo, in Texas, joined the wildlife managers at the Belize Zoo for valuable procedures and exceptional new input for the zoo animals.

Belize zookeepers strengthened their knowledge of animal care, shared techniques for necessary vet treatments, and learned how enrichment could be increased to bring daily enjoyment for the wildlife.

During the process, the zookeepers with assistance from Moreno, zookeepers gathered weight and measurement of the zoo’s star education croc, Rose.

Zookeepers assisted with moving Rose onto a scale. She’s a cool and calm crocodile weighing in at 61 pounds, measuring 5.9 inches long – a big girl, and a friendly and effective ambassador for her species.

Animal treats were provided as a challenge and Dr. Moreno, herself climbed a tree to “install” a box with howler monkey delights hidden inside. The howler monkeys spent a long time investigating and exploring their special boxes.

Collaboration with vet professionals has been a strong objective for the Belize Zoo, empowering both staff and the wildlife they care for, with a positive profile.
