The aviation detachment conducted deck landing qualifications with two CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters aboard the USS Gunston Hall on July 7.
The exercises are meant to test the Marines’ and sailors’ ability to work together as a team to successfully launch and recover the aircrafts. It is also expected that exercises will build SOUTHCOM’s operational capabilities in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The Marines along with the sailors aboard the Gunston Hall will also put their new capabilities to the test later this month by conducting a humanitarian assistance/disaster relief exercise off the coast of Belize and Guatemala. This will prepare the teams for responding to natural disasters during their deployment, which stretches well into the hurricane season.
