By BBN Staff: Belize will be hosting the regional Central American Basketball Championship next weekend at the Civic Center in Belize city. The tournament will include teams from all over the region competing for a chance to qualify for the International Basketball Federation’s (FIBA) North American Championship as well as next summer’s games in Colombia.
Former NBA and Belize national team player, Milton Palacio, has been selected to coach the Belize team participating in the tournament. Palacio arrived in country this week and has started recruiting players for the final team.
In an interview with Channel 7 News, Palacio said the team was having try-outs. He added that he has narrowed the selection down to 14 players but said he would be making his final cuts in the days ahead.
Palacio also told 7 News that a week is not an ideal amount of time to prepare for such a tournament, especially since as coach he is implementing a new system and new terms that the players will need to learn quickly. He also commented on the new Civic Center, saying he was pleased that the team can now play in a world class facility.
Palacio said he expects that the team will be nervous to start the tournament but said once they calm down and get into the game with fan support behind them, they would perform well in the competition.
