By BBN Staff:  Orange Walk police are investigating the murder of Alberto Vargas, 21, who was shot around 7:30 last night.

Vargas was reportedly traveling along with Jose Medina in a green Ford Escape when they stopped and picked up a passenger along the Belize-Corozal road.

Medina reported to police that after picking up the passenger, he stopped to buy food and while he was standing outside the vehicle, he heard commotion from the car and then he heard a gunshot. Vargas was shot twice to the neck by the passenger.

Medina reportedly returned to the vehicle and saw Vargas slumped over and bleeding. Vargas was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Inside the car, police recovered four expended .9mm shells from the back seat.

Police currently have one suspect in custody.

The motive for Vargas’ death is unknown. Police, however, say Vargas and the suspect are both known to the law.

Medina was interviewed as well and his statement is being investigated.

Police investigations are ongoing.
