US Embassy in Haiti protected by Marines

Posted: Sunday, July 15, 2018. 8:10 am CST.

BBN Staff: The United States Government has deployed US Marines to protect its Embassy in Haiti.

On Tuesday, July 10, 2018, the Marines arrived at Port-au-Prince to provide security at the embassy.

The crew on the mission are the same officers that are deployed whenever any ambassador or diplomatic post overseas is under threat.

Violent protests erupted in Haiti on July 6, after their Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant presented a plan to increase fuel prices by 51%.

At least 7 people have died amidst the crisis.

Yesterday, Lafontant officially presented his resignation letter to President Jovenel Moise.

Moise is to nominate a candidate for Prime Minister shortly.
