Orange Walk’s PLAY visits the Belize Zoo

By BBN Staff:  The Belize Zoo hosted Rebecca Hernandez, her husband Alex and daughter Amy for their Summer reading camp, Promoting Literacy All Year (PLAY).

The book chosen to study for Summer Reading Camp 2018 was about a popular Belize Zoo barn owl, named “Happy”.

“Words of Wisdom from Happy the Owl”, brought reading fun time to over 40 children.

The children enjoyed reading the book and learning new facts about Happy.

The children sang the ‘Owl Song’. A zoo tour let all “catch up” with jaguars, the harpy eagles, and Brutus, a beautiful big American crocodile.

PLAY is based in Orange Walk but the kids know all about their country’s wildlife and shared “close up and personal” views of the zoo’s special furred and feathered Belizean citizens.

The Hernandez family literally turned a portion of their home into a “learning and reading resource center”.

Clearly, it was easy to see that this fun learning experience would be long-lasting and have a continued “scholarly” positive impact.

The group also enjoyed a large ‘owl’ cake.

The Belize Zoo looks forward to further programs with PLAY, who are committed to promoting literacy.
