Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin gave his ruling today, dismissing the PUP’s request that the election be declared void. The Chief Justice reasoned that the PUP was correct in pointing out several errors that occurred during the election; however, he did not find that the errors were large enough to influence the election results.
Attorney for the United Democratic Party, Steven Perrera, explained that the laws of Belize take into account that there will be errors on election day, but that the elections were still fair because the errors made in the San Pedro election were made after the votes were cast, which meant the results were still valid.
PUP Mayoral Candidate Andre Perez said that he would be consulting with his legal team to consider an appeal of the decision.
