By BBN Staff: The national re-registration process is on-going countrywide.
Belize’s Elections and Boundaries Department have established registration centers in every electoral division in Belize.
The process is a national one for all Belizeans to register anew to be able to participate in any referendum or election in Belize.
The department is encouraging all Belizeans to visit their nearest registration center to register.
The Opposition, People’s United Party, the Belize Progressive Party, the Belize National Teacher’s Union had each previously called on the Government of Belize to conduct a re-registration process to filter out Belize’s voters lists.
As of July 14, over 35,000 Belizeans had re-registered. Both political parties have been observing the daily procedures of the process.
The 2018 September celebrations theme is “Belize da fi we; Now and Forever 8867,” so it would have been expected to see Belizean flags at the registration centers celebrating national pride and sovereignty.
However, Breaking Belize News has obtained pictures of political centers being installed less than 100 yards away from re-registration centers, as well as being fully adorned with political flags instead of Belizean flags.
Several witnesses have also reported the alleged illegal paying of electors to register by political agents.
The re-registration process is crucial to uphold Belize’s democracy and to allow each Belizean an opportunity to be heard and to be counted.
Therefore, Belizeans should enforce their right, civic duty and pride by registering as an elector willingly and without prejudice from any political party or anyone.
The re-registration process should not be a political process, but rather a process of national priority.
