Mexican cane cutter found dead in Progresso

BBN Staff: Over the weekend BBN reported that a body was found in the village of Progresso in the Corozal district.

The body has been officially identified as that of Mexican cane cutter, Isabel Martinez, 66.

Police say he was found motionless on the roadside just before 8:00 p.m. on Saturday.

His body was transported to the Corozal hospital and the Mexican Embassy in Belize was notified of his death.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Joseph Myvette said police are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

Myvette also indicated that Martinez was seen consuming alcohol inside the village before he was found dead.

He had been living in the village for the last 30 years.
