By BBN Staff: According to a report from Elsalvador.com, the United States congress will identify officials of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras that are involved in corruption and drug trafficking.
On July 26, the US Congress approved a law that will oblige the Secretary of State to inform Congress of the identities of corrupt officials of ‘Northern Triangle’ countries involved drug trafficking and other illicit practices.
Congress will now obtain a list of “names of senior government officials in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador about which there is information that has committed or facilitated acts of great corruption or drug trafficking.”
Individuals who have donated to political campaigns with funds “from drug trafficking or other illicit activities” in the last two years will also make the list.
The list will be part of a report on “drug trafficking, corruption and illicit electoral financing” in the three countries.
There has been no word whether such a list for Belize may be developed for US congress, however, it is widely agreed that systemic corruption does have an adverse impact on the country’s development.
