By BBN Staff:  On Sunday, August 5, 2018, the Deputy Director General of Technical Cooperation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Dazhu Yang, and the Section Head of Technical Cooperation for Latin America and the Caribbean, Saul Perez Pijuan, arrived in Belize for a working visit.

The aim of the visit was to strengthen technical cooperation with Belize as well as enhance regional cooperation for the country through its partnership with IAEA.

The IAEA is an international organization that seeks to accelerate and enlarge the contribution of atomic energy to peace, health, and prosperity throughout the world and to inhibit its use for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons.

Belize joined the IAEA in 2006, and has since received support for the establishment of the veterinary diagnostic laboratory at the Belize Animal Health Authority (BAHA), detection and control of the fruit fly affecting agriculture, national food safety capabilities, environmental monitoring, establishment of its radiation safety infrastructure, and cancer control by providing training, equipment and expert advice.

During their visit to Belize, Yang and Pijuan held several bilateral meetings to discuss ongoing projects and other possible areas of cooperation to maximize the use of nuclear technology for further development.

Those meetings were held with high-level Government officials including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wilfred Elrington, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Laura Tucker Longworth, senior officers of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other stakeholders including the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, the University of Belize and BAHA.

Yang and Pijuan departed Belize on Tuesday, August 7, 2018.
