City Council’s summer basketball tournament concludes this weekend

Posted: Saturday, August 11, 2018. 7:38 am CST.

BBN Staff:  This weekend the Belize City Council is approaching the end of its summer basketball tournament.

Councilor with responsibility for Youth and Sports, Micah Goodin, told us more.

“For the last five weeks we have engaged 240 children, 24 from each Belize City constituency under the age of fifteen years, ” he said.

According to Goodin the city which houses 10 constituencies had been divided up into Northside and Southside with 5 teams on each.

He added, “The tournament is wrapping up this weekend with a final four match. The best two teams from the northside u15 category will face the best two teams from the Southside u15 category. The same matchup will happen in the u12 category.”

Games will be played on Saturday and Sunday and entrance will be free of cost he explained.

According to Councilor Goodin, he chose to close the program at the civic center because he wanted to give the young athletes the opportunity to display their talents on the most popular platform in the country.

“These children are our greatest assets and they have done well to improve their talents through sportsmanship.”

Goodin thanked his coordinators Michael Novelo and Malcolm Nunez as well as staff from the Belize City Council and Marshall Nunez.

Lastly, he thanked Mayor Bernard Wagner for, “being concerned about the next generation rather than the next election.”
