By BBN Staff: On August 9th and 10th, 2018, park rangers from the Belize Audubon Society and officers from the Belize Coast Guard, Belize Fisheries Department, and Police Department conducted a joint enforcement operation at Lighthouse Reef Atoll.
Seven fishermen were found in possession of 614 out-of-shell, unprocessed conch.
The men were arrested and will now be charged for the illegal possession of conch during the closed season.
Their fishing vessel and equipment were also confiscated.
Authorities also conducted a search in the dense mangrove on Long Caye, Lighthouse Reef Atoll that resulted in the discovery of 1,916 market-cleaned conchs. The conch was labeled as found property as no one was in the area.
Authorities say that they will continue to be vigilant in the Lighthouse Reef Atoll.
The Belize Fisheries Department also reminds the public that the Conch Season is CLOSED from July 1st to September 30th, 2018.
Any person found in possession of conch during the closed season will be prosecuted in accordance with the Fisheries Regulation.
The Belize Audubon Society thanks the Belize Coast Guard, Belize Fisheries Department, and Police Department for their continued support.
