By BBN Staff: The Belize Audubon Society, the Belize Coast Guard, Belize Fisheries Department and the Belize Police department conducted a joint enforcement operation on Thursday and Friday, August 9 and 10, in an area near Long Caye, Lighthouse Reef atoll.
There, authorities busted 7 fisherman who had 614 market-cleaned conch.
In the same area, authorities found 1,916 more market cleaned conch.
The abandoned conch was then labeled as found property.
The fishermen will be charged for ‘possession of conch during the closed season’.
Their fishing vessel and its equipment have since been confiscated.
The public is reminded that the conch season is closed from July 1 to September 30, 2018.
Any person found in possession of conch during the closed season will be prosecuted in accordance to the Fisheries Regulation.
