By BBN Staff: Last week, the Southern Caucus of the People’s United Party (PUP) met to express its unanimous views on taking the Guatemalan claim on Belize’s territory to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
After the meeting, the Southern Caucus issued a release informing that based on membership views, the caucus is ‘firmly against going to the ICJ.’
The Southern Caucus says that as the area of Belize that stands the most to be negatively affected in the event of an unfavorable ruling, it is an imperative to declare their position.
“The sordid history of the unfounded Guatemalan claim has seen the Guatemalans at one point claiming the whole of Belize, to claiming from the Sarstoon to the Sibun, to at various points claiming from the Sarstoon River up to Monkey River or up to the Moho River. There has been one constant: the Guatemalans want the South, arguably the richest, most beautiful, most pristine part of our country,” the statement says.
Furthermore, the caucus explains that while Guatemala has nothing to lose and only to gain, it is Belizeans on a whole, and Southern Belizeans in particular, who have nothing to gain and everything to lose since even if someone were able to guarantee a favorable ICJ ruling, no one can guarantee that the Guatemalans will abide by such a ruling.
The caucus says that Guatemala’s record of aggression and lawlessness against their own people is proof enough that they cannot be trusted to adhere to any ruling that they were to find unfavorable.
“ For we in the South choose to be Belizeans today, tomorrow, and forever, with all our territory intact as envisioned by the Father of Belize, George Cadle Price,” the caucus declared.
The PUP Southern Caucus concludes that it is in that spirit they will continue to conduct internal consultations in their respective villages and towns to listen to the voices of the people.
Members of the caucus includes area representatives, Rodwell Ferguson, Mike Espat, Oscar Requena and PUP standard bearer for Dangriga, Louis Zabaneh.
