Traffic accident claims life of cane farmer

By BBN Staff: Police are investigating a traffic accident that claimed the life of a man last night.

According to reports, around 7:30 last night, police went to an area between Miles 63 and 64 on the Phillip Goldson Highway where they saw a pickup parked on the highway and a man lying motionless under the vehicle.

The man was identified as Ermitiano Gonzalez, 63, a cane farmer of San Jose Village, Orange Walk.

Police investigations revealed that Freddy Nicholson,34, an optomologist was driving the pickup from Orange Walk to Corozal when he allegedly hit Gonzalez who was walking alongside the highway.

Gonzalez was transported to the Northern Regional hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Blood samples were taken from Nicholson and he has since been served with a notice of intended prosecution.

Police investigation continue.
