Today, Espat took to social media to express his views on taking Guatemala’s long standing claim on Belize’s territory to the International Court of Justice.
Espat says that after assessing both sides of the issue, he is convinced that ‘the risk of losing any part of our territory is too much to take.’
“We have already gone through the difficult process of obtaining our Independence with our territory defined. This was unanimously agreed to by the vast majority of nations of the world. We cannot ignore this great achievement by our forefathers,” Espat stated.
According to Espat, at this time Belize’s focus as a nation should not be on Guatemala’s unfounded claim but on eliminating corruption in Government, driving and growing the economy, devising new ways to create employment, and joining together to address the alarming and unacceptable levels of crime in Belize.
Espat informed that since democracy allows all Belizeans the right to chose to vote yes or no to the ICJ, he reserves his right to vote no in the upcoming referendum.
