BBN Staff: Assistant Commissioner of Police, Joseph Myvett, today weighed in on a case of domestic abuse which led to murder early this morning.

He confirmed to the press that Arturo Rodriguez, 48, up to press time has not yet faced charges for murdering his common-law wife, Mariela Alpuche, 34.

The couple who resided in Trial Farm, Orange Walk, had gone to Independence in southern Belize to spend the weekend with other loved ones.

However, sometime around 2 a.m. today, the two had an argument which led to a physical altercation.

During that altercation, Alpuche was choked until she passed out.

Rodriguez quickly alerted other family members who were staying in nearby rooms. They tried to resuscitate her but she did not respond.

She was transported to the Independence Polyclinic where she was certified dead.

While Rodriguez remains detained pending investigations, police say that the nature of the dispute between he and the deceased are unknown.
