Health ministry warns of unauthorized private cemeteries

Posted: Tuesday, August 21, 2018. 2:38 pm CST.

BBN Staff: The Ministry of health today issued a statement to  remind the public that the burial of deceased family members on private premises is prohibited by the Public Health Act.

Every undertaker conducting burials on behalf of a family is also expected to adhere and only ensure services provided for approved cemeteries, in compliance with the Public Health Act Chapter 40 Section 30 (1) of Laws of Belize.

The public is being reminded that where families have interest in establishing a private/family cemetery outside service areas, an application must be submitted to the Ministry of Health for review and approval by the Director of Health Services.

Anyone found in violation of the Act will be prosecuted under the Public Health Act Chapter 40, and anyone guilty of the offense is liable to a fine of $1000.
