Music Ambassador and private sector donate to Garifuna Collective

Posted: Tuesday, August 21, 2018. 5:01 pm CST.

BBN Staff: The Office of the Music Ambassador, the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) and Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) have joined together to give the Garifuna Collective a donation of $30,000 to help with their expenses in attending the World Music Expo being held from October 24-28 in Las Plamas de Gran Canaria, Spain.

Music Ambassador Shyne Barrow, joined with representatives from BTL and the BTB at the Bliss Institute for Performing Arts this afternoon, to hand over the cheques. Of the total donation, $20,000 came from BTL, $5,000 came from the BTB and $5000 came from the Music Ambassador.

Barrow explained that he went around requesting donations for the Garifuna Collective because he believes in their ability to represent Belize at such a prestigious event.

Barrow noted that the amount raised is only a portion of the $80,000 needed for the group to attend WOMEX, but that the amount should at least cover their travel expenses.

This year will mark the Garifuna Collective’s first appearance at WOMEX since they went along with Belizean music Icon Andy Palacio, who won the WOMEX award in 2007 with the hit song “Watina”.
