PUP leaders to “vote their conscience” on ICJ

Posted: Thursday, August 23, 2018. 9:53 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Yesterday, the Opposition People’s United Party (PUP) held a national executive meeting at Independence Hall in Belize City.

The PUP announced that they will embark on a national education campaign to share with Belizeans all the pros and cons of going to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to resolve the country’s territorial dispute with Guatemala.

At the meeting, chairman Henry Charles Usher explained that the party has taken a decision to encourage their standard bearers and supporters to “ vote their conscience”.

PUP Party Leader, John Briceno had publicly stated that personally, he was in favor of taking Guatemala’s long-standing claim on Belize’s territory to the ICJ.

However, several PUP standard bearers and caucuses have said that they will vote ‘No to the ICJ’.

The PUP’s education campaign is scheduled to begin next month.
