By BBN Staff: A police officer has been subjected to internal disciplinary action after two accused drug-traffickers walked free this week because the arresting officer did not show up for the trial.

He was absent in court when the trial began for accused drug traffickers, Peter Schmidt, 37,  and Carlos Lopez, 33.

As a result of the absence of the arresting officers, Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford had no choice but to dismiss the charges against the accused men.

Last December both men were busted inside with 5 kilos of cocaine and a firearm.

They were driving in the Buttonwood Bay area of Belize city when cops pulled them over and conducted a search.

Subsequently the men were charged with drug trafficking and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
