Fired for speaking out?

Posted: Friday, August 31, 2018. 4:35 pm CST.

BBN Staff: Dr. Carlos Itza, the now former Chairman of the Sugar Control Production Committee (SCPC), received his termination letter this week from the Sugar Industry Control Board (SICB) after speaking out publicly earlier in the week alleging mismanagement and suggesting an audit of the SICB should be performed.

According to Itza, the move to have him terminated violates all labor laws and contractual agreements established. He said it even violates the process used for engaging him into the sector.

Itza was informed that his contract, which ended yesterday, August 30, would not be renewed and he was instructed to hand over all company property by midday yesterday.

Itza alleged that the SICB has not held proper meetings, or provided adequate expenditure reports, finance reports, annual reports or a work plan to guide the sector. Itza says he has raised concern for the past two years but his complaints have gone unanswered. Itza claims it is because he has been outspoken that he has been targeted for termination.

Itza further claims he has even been physically threatened and attacked. Itza said he filed a police report against the people who attacked him and said he is not familiar with the people targeting him but suspects it is related to his speaking out about what’s happening in the sugar industry. Itza has met with his attorneys to determine how to handle the situation moving forward.
