By BBN Staff: Today, Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales announced that his Government will not renew the mandate of the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG).
The CICIG is a United Nations supported anti-corruption commission that has been working in Guatemala to convict corrupt government ministers and officials.
In a local media conference today, Morales stated, “We have officially notified the Secretary General of the United Nations that we will not renew the mandate of the CICIG.”
In April 2017, Morales publicly called for the removal of the head of CICIG, Ivan Velasquez.
At that time, the United States Government and several foreign embassies reaffirmed their support for the chief of CICIG in the fight against impunity in the country.
The commission has been instrumental in bringing down corrupt parliamentarians and root out corruption in the country. The delegation comprises of foreign experts and has worked with top Guatemalan prosecutors. In 2015, former President Otto Perez Molina was forced to resign and remains in prison.
Morales’ announcement was made today as Guatemalan military officials and soldiers surrounded the headquarters of CICIG office in Guatemala city.
