Placencia organizes sargassum clean up

BBN Staff: The Placencia Sargassum Task Force has organized a clean up campaign for Sunday, September 2.

Attendees are asked to meet in front of the Placencia police station at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday.

Today, the Placencia Village Council held an emergency meeting to strategize on dealing with the continuous issue of sargassum washing up on the Placencia beaches.

Sargassum is a genus of brown seaweed distributed throughout the temperate and tropical oceans of the world.

Annually, vast amounts of sargassum wash up on Belizean beaches. The sargassum brings with it an unpleasant odor and a negative environmental impact.

The village council has also called for a community meeting for tomorrow September 1 at 5:00 p.m. at Tipsy Tuna in Placencia.

The issue is not only affecting Placencia beaches but also beaches in Caye Caulker and San Pedro.
