John Briceno holds press conference to comment on State of Emergency

Posted: Wednesday, September 5, 2018. 4:00 pm CST.

BBN Staff: Yesterday the Government of Belize (GoB)  passed a statutory instrument indicating a state of emergency for Mayflower and George Streets in Belize City.

Additionally, GoB has approved measures for the detention of gang members for a month in prison.

Today the Leader of the Opposition, John Briceno held a press conference to comment on the matter.

Firstly, he indicated that the Mayor of Belize City was not consulted before the state of emergency was activated.

He said this is apart of a continued trend of disrespect for the mayor by GoB.

Briceno also called for the removal of Commissioner of Police, Allen Whylie.

Coincidentally, Whylie is out of the country.

According to Briceno, he believes that action should be taken against criminals.

However, he believes that GoB is using the wrong approach and if it was his government, it would not call for a state of emergency.

As a matter of fact, according to Briceno, his government would not have been in this position as it would have invested significantly in human and social development
