Guatemalan Armed Forces demand Territorial Volunteers follow ‘protocol’ at Sarstoon island

Posted: Saturday, September 15, 2018. 8:05 am CST.

BBN Staff: Yesterdaythe Belize Territorial Volunteer (BTV) went to the Sarstoon island to plant their Belizean flag in preparation for their Kayak eco-challenge race tomorrow.

But, the BTV met members of the Guatemalan armed forces who demanded that BTV follow ‘protocols’.

In a video shared with BBN, Wil Maheia, BTV leader, asked the officer if he is aware that the island is Belizean territory, and in response, the Guatemalan officer replied, “ It is not for Belize. There are some international protocols that need to be respected. In those protocols, it was established that this area is not for civil navigation.”

Furthermore, the Guatemalan officer told Maheia that to navigate that area, he needed to go to the Immigration Office.

The Guatemalan officer then reiterated and asked Maheia to leave the area.

Despite the encounter, the BTV went ahead and planted their Belizean flag before leaving.
