By BBN Staff: The People’s United Party (PUP) today issued a statement saying that it views with “consternation” the release by the Belize Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCI) on the Universal Health Services (UHS) matter.
“The condemnation of the childish and petulant behavior in the House of Representatives (HOR), a comportment that has been a UDP norm for the last ten years, took an inordinate amount of time to be publicly denounced by one of the social partners,” the PUP states.
The PUP says that it is also dismayed at the gullibility of such a prestigious and important social partner [the BCCI] in failing to recognize the obvious political ploy by the UDP not only with the UHS matter but several other costly financial matters such as the now infamous BTL saga.
The party explains that the initial UHS debt was not incurred and resolved in the most transparent manner but nevertheless, was dealt with and was fixed by the PUP.
“The new UDP generated debt of $95M falls squarely on those in the National Assembly that have persistently and purposely created these politically and financially beneficial schemes as a way to enrich their cronies, friends, and families,” the statement expressed.
The PUP says that like the BCCI and other social partners, the PUP believes and respects the rule of law.
Furthermore, the party says that it is evident that when the Prime Minister tabled a bill, with the publicly announced intention to vote against it, he created a crisis in our democracy confronting the three branches of government and making a mockery of our political system.
The PUP then accuses the ruling UDP party of playing games in an attempt to trick the electorate in voting for the UDP.
The PUP assures Belizeans that it will remain vigilant and will bring to the fore all issues of concern.
“As a responsible Opposition, we will always act in the best interest of our nation,” the statement ends.
