By BBN Staff: On Friday, September 14th, 2018, the Belize Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCI) issued a press release regarding the State of Public Emergency in some parts of the Southside of Belize City.
Today, the Opposition, People’s United Party (PUP) responded to the Chamber’s statement.
The PUP says that they believe that after the BCCI commended the security forces for the narco plane capture and the persons implicated with the illegal landing and drugs, they (BCCI) then laid blame on elected representatives for the increase in criminal activity.
“The BCCI’s release strayed away from referring to the root causes of crime and the role the society as a whole plays in the creation of this scourge,” the PUP said.
In the release, the PUP reiterates its call for greater community participation in preventing crime and in addressing the root causes and calls for greater public and private sector investment in the social and human capital of the country especially in the marginalized areas of Belize City.
According to the PUP, they believe in fighting crime not only with the use of force but also by meaningfully assisting the at-risk neighborhoods and communities in Belize.
The party says that it continues to remind the corresponding authorities that this should be done in respect of the rule of law and human rights.
“In ten years of this UDP government, crime has risen exponentially and Belizeans are yet to know of a clear and structured plan involving all stakeholders,” the statement expressed.
Furthermore, the Opposition says that they have offered their willingness to work along with the government in addressing this problem plaguing our communities for decades.
“PUP Leader John Briceño and other elected PUP representatives have offered to work along with the government but their calls for a more bipartisan approach to crime have fallen on deaf ears.”
Recently, the PUP had proposed that the Southside of Belize City be declared a special development zone to encourage private sector investment in that area.
The PUP says that it is imperative that as a nation we work together to fight crime and ensure that the nation’s growth and development is not further retarded by this grave problem.
The PUP appeals to the BCCI to be a part of the solution by encouraging entrepreneurship and apprenticeship programs to generate economic activity that will create meaningful employment for Belizean youths and women in the Southside of Belize City.
