By BBN Staff: The University of the West Indies and Channel 5 Belize yesterday held a town hall meeting in Belize City with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wilfred Elrington.
The meeting was held for Belizeans to clarify any doubts they may have about taking Guatemala’s longstanding claim on Belize’s continental, insular and maritime territory to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
During the discourse, Elrington was asked about the continuous incursions of the Guatemalan armed forces into Belizean waters and the “protocol” that the Guatemalans ask Belizeans to follow.
In response, Elrington said that there is nothing special about the Sarstoon Island and further added, “ I don’t know what is the fascination with the Sarstoon Island you know, because the Guatemalan claim is to the whole country. There’s nothing special about the Sarstoon Island.”
On April 10, 2019, Belizeans will go to the polls to vote in favor or against taking the long-standing Guatemalan claim on Belize’s territory to the ICJ.
