By BBN Staff: The People’s United Party (PUP) mourns the tragic loss of lives of a father and his three children during a fire,
which occurred early Sunday morning in Orange Walk Town.

According to a statement released to the media today, Party Leader John Briceño and Mayor Kevin Bernard extend heartfelt condolences to the Petillo family.

The PUP calls on the Government of Belize to immediately launch a full investigation into Sunday’s fire.

“We also call on the government to provide a full report to the nation on the status of our Fire Department and
Government’s plan to address the many challenges facing the Fire Department nationwide. Once again, Belizeans are angered that lives which could have been saved were lost,” the PUP said in the statement.

“Reports are now emerging that paints a picture of incompetence and inaction which must be attributed to the government’s inability and unwillingness to effectively and efficiently allocate resources to improve the Fire Department in every municipality,” the release further adds.

According to the PUP,  fire engines posted in a number of municipalities around the country lack the
adequate capacity to fight a serious fire.

“We were informed in the case of Sunday’s fire that the Orange Walk Fire Department was only able to provide
five minutes of water since the hydrant closest to the fire was not working. This demands URGENT action to ensure that no other life is lost due to this kind of negligence,” the release ends by saying.
