By BBN Staff: Belize, a country often dependent on foreign aid, might soon find itself in an uncomfortable position.
That is because US President, Donald Trump, warned that he would cut off US foreign aid to countries which did not support US interests.
This announcement came on Tuesday during the opening of the annual general assembly of the United Nations at its headquarters in New York.
According to Trump, he has already ordered an investigation to show whether countries benefiting from US aid has served US interests.
He explained that the US is the largest provider of foreign assistance but in exchange the US has received little returns.
“Moving forward we will only give foreign aid to those who respect us and are our friends,” said Trump.
The call for a cut in foreign aid by the Trump administration became louder at the end of last year when 128 countries voted against the US moving Israel’s capital to Jerusalem.
Belize was one of those countries that had then voted against the US.
