Belize observes International Day of Older Persons 

Staff: October 1st is observed as International Day of Older Persons.  

In Belize, approximately 6% of the population is older persons and each year this population continues to grow. 

According to the Belize National Council of Ageing (NCA), it is projected that by 2040 this number will have more than doubled to 18%.  

The NCA notes that older persons in Belize remain a vulnerable population and many older persons continue to be the backbone of their families contributing through childcare, housekeeping and other domestic tasks that go unrecognized and unpaid. 

“October 1st offers us an opportunity to show appreciation and recognition to older persons for their contributions and also to recognize the challenges that come with aging,” the NCA release states. 

In observation of October 1st the NCA is hosting its annual Conference on Ageing on October 4th, 2018 at the Best Western Biltmore Plaza under the theme: Financial Planning for Retirement.  

The NCA says that in 2010, HelpAge International estimated that over 65% of all older Persons in Belize did not have access to a pension. Thus, financial security and financial resilience remain a challenge for older persons in Belize. 

In an effort to safeguard the financial security of Belizeans this year’s conference will focus on: 

• Educating key stakeholders on the importance of preparing for retirement
• Provide information regarding financial planning and how to adequately plan for retirement in the existing Belizean Economy.
• Discuss the benefits of pension provision for employees.
• Provide information to promote independent retirement planning through long term savings options.
• Provide an overview of the existing Pensions Act and its impact on Belizean employers and employees.

Older persons organizations across the country will be carrying out various activities this week, and throughout the month of October. The NCA encourages the public to participate in these activities and to take this opportunity to connect with older persons in their community.
