By BBN Staff: Burglaries in the Cayo area appear to be on the rise this week with the third home burglarized in the last three (3) days.

This third incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at the home of Doctor Maria Goncalves located just off the Western Highway on the Barton Creek road in Blackman Eddy village.

According to confirmed reports, somewhere between 1:00 and 2:00 on Tuesday afternoon at least one (1) male person forcibly entered the house and stole an assortment of jewelry, a laptop computer and other household items. The thief was assisted by others who were on the lookout and waited in a vehicle that was parked at the entrance of the driveway to the property.

Inside the house, the thief encountered the 80 plus year old mother of Dr. Goncalves and hit her in the face causing injuries. The senior woman somehow managed to exit the house and sought the assistance of the nearby farmhand who called Dr. Goncalves and the police.

Roaring Creek police, who were in the vicinity conducting investigations on the missing 17 year old Ontario resident, Gerardo Vasquez, responded quickly and were also joined by San Ignacio police. However, the burglars escaped before the police arrived.

The injured woman was treated and released to Dr. Goncalves who herself is a medical doctor.

Police are investigating this recent burglary/home invasion and are expected to release an official report later.
