Belizean Writers Invited to Enter The 2019 Commonwealth Short Story Prize

Posted: Thursday, October 4, 2018. 2:02 pm CST.

Staff: Belizean authors are invited to participate in The 2019 Commonwealth Short Story Prize.

The organization is searching for the best unpublished short fiction works (2,000 – 5,000 words).

According to a release from NICH, five regional winners will receive a cash award amounting to £2,500 (BZ$6,500) and the overall winner receives £5,000 (BZ$13,000.00).

This invitation is open to various genres as well as being open to entries in English and those translated into English from any language.

The release says that the competition is the only literary prize in the world where entries can be submitted in Bengali, Chinese, Kiswahili, Malay, Portuguese, Samoan and Tamil.

“Through this invitation, we hope to gain the attention and participation of our many talented Belizean writers and various institutions to the 2019 Commonwealth Short Story Prize,” the release further notes.

The release also notes that the increase in entries from writers in the Caribbean, and specifically under-represented countries such as Belize, assist in bringing a more inclusive range of narratives to the attention of the Commonwealth Short Story Prize’s international audience.
