The NCFC notes that the past few weeks have seen instances where children have been injured, traumatized and have even lost their lives.
“These cases highlight the fact that even though Belize was one of the first countries to sign on to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, there is still a lot of work to be done to ensure that children are protected and safe as outlined in Article 6 of the Convention that states a child has the right to be alive; while Article 19 speaks to the right of the child to be protected,” the statement says.
The NCFC emphasizes that it is imperative for parents and families to take their rightful role in keeping children safe from harm.
“This includes ensuring that children are continuously supervised, are given a safe environment in which to live and thrive and their daily needs are satisfied.”
Furthermore, the NCFC says that it is the duty of the State to ensure that the needs of families are being met.
“They must create an environment where our children can grow and reach their full potential. It is only when this is done that we will meet our goal of achieving our vision ensuring that Belize becomes the best country in the world in which to grow up and raise a family,” the statement explained.
