US Vice President warns Central America on ties with China

Posted: Friday, October 12, 2018. 7:29 am CST.

BBN Staff: Yesterday, United States Vice President, Mike Pence warned Central American nations to be cautious when building relations with China.

Pence met with representatives from Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras and El Salvador in Washington where he brought up the conversation.

Pence explained, ” I say to each of those nations represented here, on behalf of our administration, as you build commercial partnerships with other nations including China, we urge you to focus on and demand transparency and look after your and our long-term interests.”

In August, El Salvador cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan for China.

However, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua remain with strong diplomatic ties to Taiwan rather than China.

China has used its economic muscle and promises of investment to entice governments in the region.

Pence was meeting with the Central American leaders to discuss the vast flow of undocumented immigrants into the United States.

Immigration continues to be a focal issue for the Trump administration.

Pence encouraged leaders to explain to their citizens that if they can’t enter the US legally, they should not enter at all. He commended Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala for the prosperous Northern triangle stating, “Your people will stay home if they believe there is a brighter future for them there.”
