Police: Driver lost control of his vehicle and fell into the river

BBN Staff: Police have officially commented on a tragic road traffic accident which claimed the life of one man over the weekend.

On Saturday, at about 11:30 p.m. Orange Walk police visited San Antonio village.

Villagers told police that they heard a loud bang at the main entrance to the village where the San Antonio Bridge is located.

They revealed that when they took a closer look they saw a vehicle submerged in the river.

Police and civilians from the village went into the river and were able to take out the driver from the vehicle.

However, he had already passed away.

He was later identified as Francisco Pacquil of a Belize City address.

According to Assistant Superintendent of Police, Alejandro Cowo, the deceased was driving from Orange Walk town towards the village when he lost control of the vehicle, knocking into the railing of the bridge and falling into the river.

Cowo explained that the deceased had passed a checkpoint at the Toll Bridge earlier that night and that was how officers were able to establish his identity.

At that time, he was reportedly in a sober state.
