PUP concerned about Mexico’s proposed freezones at border states

Posted: Wednesday, October 17, 2018. 4:39 pm CST.

BBN Staff:  The Opposition People’s United Party (PUP) today issued a press release in response to Mexico’s proposals on constructing a free zone at the northern border.

Last week Mexican President-Elect, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, announced that free zones would be created at Mexico’s northern and southern borders.

This would see a decrease in value added tax at border states such as Chetumal in Quintana Roo.

According to the PUP, this development is a “national crisis” that requires immediate attention.

The statement added that the party is surprised that the government, “has been silent on this matter.”

According to the PUP, while Belize’s northern border and the northern free zone will be affected, implications are also ever-present for Belize’s economy.

The PUP calls on the government to convene a committee of experts from the business sector as a think tank on how to address this matter.

The party also calls on the Ministry of Trade to dialogue with their Mexican counterparts on how to mitigate the negative impacts of this development.
