Murder of Ellis “Pepper Gacho” Meighan remains unsolved, accused murderer walks free before CCJ

Posted: Thursday, October 18, 2018. 8:28 am CST.

BBN Staff: Convicted murderer, Japhet Bennet, has had his murder conviction overturned in an appeal before the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).

After nine years on remand for the 2009 murder of Ellis “Pepper Gacho” Meighan, Bennet was a free man yesterday.

According to his legal counsel, Audrey Matura, the court agreed that he was convicted on the statement of a witness who provided a questionable statement.

The witness, Marlon Middleton, had initially told police he saw Bennet murder his brother-in-law but in court, he changed his statement.

According to Matura, this inconsistent statement was too weak to have landed Bennet’s conviction.

Matura was assisted by her colleague, Anthony Sylvestre. And they were both supported by attorneys from the Death Penalty Project.

On the night of September 13, 2009, Meighan was shot and killed while riding his bicycle at the corner of Banak Street and Central American Boulevard.

One week before his murder, one of his sons was charged with attempted murder.

Police had indicated that both incidents were related.
